Roma Pass Offers Best Bang For Tourist Bucks

For both transportation and Rome sightseeing, the Roma Pass has gained tremendous momentum since its launch last year.
The Roma Pass has quickly gained popularity among tourists to Rome. Introduced in 2007 as a way to simplify transport options for tourists as well as to promote visits to many of Rome's museums and cultural sites, sales have skyrocketed this year and are expected to continue rising.
The pass is a three day ticket for transport and sightseeing in Rome. It is activated when first used, whether for transportation of to enter one of the monuments included. From that moment it is active until midnight of the third day for unlimited transport on Rome's bus, tram, and metro lines (not the Roma-Fiumicino airport express line).
The pass does allow free and preferred entry without lining up to two of the following monuments, while from the third monument on, discounts apply.
Colosseum & Palatine Hill
Capitoline Museums
Trajan’s Markets and Forum
Ruins at Ostia Antica
Museo Nazionale Romano
Borghese Gallery
Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna
Museo Nazionale di Piazza Venezia
(extended list available at http://www.romapass.it/)

The cost of the Roma Pass is 20 Euro, scheduled to increase from January 1, 2009 to 23 Euro. To give you an idea of the savings, the entrance fees to the Coliseum and Borghese Museums alone would amount to 20.50 Euro. When you add up all the public transport tickets for three days, plus the discounts granted for additional museums, the savings is significant. Our advice? Get yourself a Roma Pass. You'll have a carte blanche to explore even off the beaten path Rome and you can use the savings to splurge on a Rome sightseeing tour or a nice meal out.
The Roma Pass comes with an official city of Rome sightseeing map, a list and guide to the monuments covered by the pass, and a guide to additional events of interest to which a discount will apply when the Roma Pass is shown.
To date, the Roma pass is not valid and cannot be used for entrance to the Vatican Museums.
