This short set of lessons is meant to serve as a basic survival guide which will help you gain confidence in communicating in Italian at the beginner level. Whether your goal is to communicate with Italians, or simply to make life easier while Rome sightseeing, knowing a few key phrases will help you immensely.

GENERAL GREETINGS

Buon Giorno!   Good Day!           

Ciao! Both hello and goodbye (Ciao is more casual than buongiorno)

Salve.  Salutations (more formal than ciao or buon giorno)

Come stai? How are you?

Sto Bene!  I’m good!

Male! Not well

Buon Pomeriggio. Good Afternoon

Buona sera. Good Evening

Buona Notte. Good night!

A presto! See you soon!

Arrivederci. Until next time!

That wasn’t so hard, was it? Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it will take time to learn Italian well. Don’t be discouraged, you’ll be surprised how far a few key phrases will get you.  Stay tuned for the next chapter when we’ll move on to matters of great importance on one’s first day in Italy: asking for Rome sightseeing guidance and changing money.
