Top Gelaterie for Gelato Addicts

Some of the best food in Rome is served in a cone

From Pistacchio to Nutella, here's the skinny on Rome's hottest gelato shops

No matter what time of year it is, gelato is always in season here in Rome. At any time, one will see Italians enjoying a nice cup or cone of straciatella, cioccolato, or one the hundreds of different flavors available. When looking for a great gelateria, it's best to stay away from tourist stands and chain gelaterie. As always, the best you'll find will be homemade!

As the morning Vatican Tours come to a close and temptation sets in, have no fear. Gelarmony is only about a ten minute walk from the Vatican City itself. Enjoy the organic and all-natural ingredients used to make a diverse selection, including aztec chocolate, honey and almond, nutella, and one of the most refreshing lemon sorbets in all of Rome. As a Sicilian gelateria, Gelarmony also offers sweets typical of the region, including an icy granita and the ever popular cannoli. Gelato made from soy milk is also available.

On a warm summer night after a lovely Italian meal, we suggest foregoing dessert at the restaurant to make room for an extreme gelato experience while strolling through the piazzas and fountains of Rome while Illuminated at night.  Fassi, also known as “Il Palazzo del Freddo”, or the house of cold, is one of the oldest and most famous gelaterie in the city, founded in 1880. The Fassi family has been serving the same rich gelato according to family tradition for over 100 years. Their shop is a bit of a walk from the central historic center, but well worth a stroll (partly uphill) to work up an appetite and burn off a few of the calories about to be consumed! Grab a cone and savor each bite through the cobblestone streets.

Set aside one of your evenings in Rome for the area of Trastevere. Trastevere is overflowing with great restaurants and shops, and is also home to the eco-friendly Fior di Luna. Though the selection of flavors may be slightly small, the taste alone will make a large impact on any gelato enthusiast. This gelateria will only serve fruit sorbets that are in season, making sure that each flavor is made from the freshest, ripest fruits for maximum taste. Those tourists that have a concern for the environment will be happy to know that all of the products used for the making of the gelato are organic and fair-trade. Fior di Luna also offers a large array of products such as fair-trade coffee and homemade hazelnut spread.

Please note Fassi is located in Via Principe Eugenio, not Amedeo.
Did you hear about Tony in Monteverde? It's near the Tram number 8, don't know the exact address. Variegato di Nutella with RELA Nutella in it!! Amazing!!!
