Rome in a Day
Overview
"Rome in a Day" private full day tour with one of our expert guides packs all the most important things to see in Rome in approximately seven (7) hours of history, art, architecture, and archaeology, with a couple of refreshment stops along the way. Colosseum, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, Palatine Hill, Imperial Fora, Piazza Venezia, Capitoline Hill, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, and Campo de' Fiori in the morning, and a fact filled Vatican afternoon comprising the magnificent Vatican museums, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Church, and St. Peter's Square.
MORNING: COLOSSEUM AND ANCIENT CITY
09:30 AM (recommended start time): Inside the Colosseum you'll be told about it's origins and speedy construction, then discuss a selection of accounts from literature describing the daily carnage. Who ran the shows? How many people died there? Was it really flooded for mock naval battles? Where did the animals come from? Did people really need a ticket to get in? What about snacks? All these questions and many more will be answered as you look out across the iconic structure and try to unite the scenes we all know and love in Ridley Scott's film "Gladiator" with bare facts gleaned from historians.
An explanation of the Colossus of Nero and Arch of Constantine in the Valley of the Colosseum is given before a tour of the ancient Roman Forum and Capitoline Hill, which includes all the main basilicas and temples in the area as well as sites where criminals and enemies of the state were thrown to their deaths, from the forboding Tarpeian rock, and in other cases, the Gemonian stairs.
A walk into the centro storico with breaks on Piazza Navona, beside the Trevi fountain, and in front of the ancient Pantheon follows, during which your guide will relate the fascinating story of Rome's Field of Mars.
AFTERNOON: VATICAN CITY
14:00 PM (recommended start time): The Vatican Museums, Belvedere Courtyard, Room of the Muses, Round Room, Greek Cross Room, Gallery of Tapestries, Gallery of Maps, Raphael Rooms, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Square, St. Peter's Basilica. It's a comprehensive half day tour of the Vatican City which will change the way you appreciate art and architecture forever!
Do remember that the above is a suggested itinerary only. If you wish to exclude some sites or include others, we can allocate a guide to suit your specific needs. Please let us know if you would like a custom itinerary. With the above itinerary, you will see all the major sites and piazzas in Rome, and this will be done with a depth of information.
