Overview

Three days in Rome covers the Roman Forum, Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Rome's historic Centre through the ages, Vatican Museums, St. Peter's Basilica, and subterranean Rome - a new itinerary of underground tours in ancient crypts and catacombs. Airport transfers to and from your hotel included!

Approximately fifteen (15) hours on any three (3) days excluding religious holidays. Please note that the Entire Vatican City segment cannot be taken on Sundays. You are most welcome to change the order of days, i.e. Entire Vatican City on day three, Entire Ancient Rome on day two, Underground Rome on day one - just let us know your preference when you book.

DAY ONE: ENTIRE VATICAN CITY

09:30 AM (recommended start time): You'll meet your private guide on the Capitoline side of Piazza Venezia, and proceed alongside each of the Imperial Forums to the Colosseum. Without waiting, you'll enter the arena and be shown how the immense structure was constructed, when, by whom, and for what purpose. Close to the Valley of the Colosseum you'll see the Oppian Hill where Trajan's Baths and Nero's Golden House are located. The Arch of Constantine and plinth upon which the Colossus of Nero once stood will be studied, before you walk up Via Sacra into the ancient Roman Forum.

The second part of day one proffers a thorough explanation of all the structures which can be seen and walked through inside the Roman Forum and on the legendary Palatine Hill. You'll learn a great deal about Rome in antiquity, from the Iron Age origins of the city, to how the first sewage system was developed and maintained. Hear about Etruscan monarchy, law and order in Republican Rome, what the temple ruins we see today really represent, Roman Imperial dynasties, and why the concept of overbuilding is so crucial to one's understanding of the Roman Forum area.

The third part of day one covers the Centro Storico. You'll be guided across the ancient Campus Martius (Field of Mars) and explore locations including the Gate of Ottavia, Theatre of Marcellus, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona. You'll visit the most important churches from the period of Roman Baroque and learn about life in Rome during the Middle Ages. Of course we visit all the most well-known fountains and statues in the historic centre, as well as some not so well-known works of art which are rarely visited, ergo relatively undisturbed.

DAY TWO: ENTIRE ANCIENT ROME

14:00 PM (recommended start time): St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums are labyrinthine in every respect, so day two is in fact our 'Entire Vatican City' private tour. All the galleries and rooms wherein major works of art are displayed, are visited. It is of the essence to browse and learn about the magnificent museums long after morning crowds have dispersed. The Round Room, Braccio Nuovo Wing, Sistine Chapel, Pio-Clementine Museum, Pinacoteca, St. Peter's Square and Papal sarcophagi beneath St. Peter's Church are the focal point.

DAY THREE: UNDERGROUND ROME

Despite what you see when in Rome, ancient Rome lies between 9 and 15 metres underground. The vast majority of ancient city structures will never be excavated and as a result, our understanding of life in antiquity is for the most part limited to access through catacombs, scavi and crypts on religious sites. We have selected the most fascinating crypts and catacombs in Rome and they are as follows: Basilica di San Clemente, the Christian Catacombs of Sant'Agnese (and Mausoleum of Santa Costanza), and the Basilica of St. Martino ai Monti.

Do remember that the above is a suggested itinerary only. If you wish to exclude some sites or include others, we can allocate a guide to suit your specific needs. Please let us know if you would like a custom itinerary. With the above itinerary, you will see all the major sites and piazzas in and underneath Rome, and this will be done with a depth of information.

"Three Days in Rome" is fundamentally a walking tour, however, several short taxi rides may be necessary which are not included in tour cost above.

When you book this tour, please let us know your hotel or other accommodation address in Rome, and your flight details. Limo transfers to and from either Ciampino (CIA) or Fiumicino (FCO) airports are included.
