Overview

“Rome in a Day: Private” full day, fully private and exclusive walking tour with one of our expert guides packs all the most important things to see in Rome in approximately seven (7) hours of history, art, architecture, and archaeology, with a couple of refreshment stops along the way! Coliseum, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, Palatine Hill, Imperial Fora, Piazza Venezia, Capitoline Hill, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, and Campo de’ Fiori in the morning, and a fact filled Vatican afternoon comprising the magnificent Vatican museums, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Church, and St. Peter’s Square.

Inside the Coliseum you’ll be told about it’s origins and speedy construction, then discuss a selection of accounts from literature describing the daily carnage. Who ran the shows? How many people died there? Was it really flooded for mock naval battles? Where did the animals come from? Did people really need a ticket to get in? What about snacks? All these questions and many more will be answered as you look out across the iconic structure and try to unite the scenes we all know and love in Ridley Scott’s film “Gladiator” with bare facts gleaned from historians.

An explanation of the Colossus of Nero and Arch of Constantine in the Valley of the Coliseum is given before a tour of the ancient Roman Forum and Capitoline Hill, which includes all the main basilicas and temples in the area as well as sites where criminals and enemies of the state were thrown to their deaths, from the forboding Tarpeian rock, and in other cases, the Gemonian stairs.

A walk into the historic center with breaks on Piazza Navona, beside the Trevi fountain, and in front of the ancient Pantheon follow, during which your guide will relate the fascinating story of Rome’s Field of Mars.

After lunch you’ll skip-the-line into the Vatican Museums, Belvedere Courtyard, Room of the Muses, Round Room, Greek Cross Room, Gallery of Tapestries, Gallery of Maps, Raphael Rooms, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Square, St. Peter’s Basilica. A thorough Vatican City experience which will change the way you appreciate art and architecture forever!

“Rome in a Day” is fundamentally a walking tour, however, one or two short taxi rides may be necessary which are not included in tour cost.

Meeting point info will be sent in booking confirmation e-mail. For security reasons, backpacks, rucksacks, large handbags, luggage etc. are banned inside the Coliseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill.

Before e-mailing us about availability and cost, please read this page.

A very detailed look into Roman history

We wanted to see Rome with the best possible guides and having researched When In Rome Tours on such websites as TripAdvisor, we decided to choose them. Luckily we had Christina and another guide whose name eludes me. It's not just about seeing the archaeological and historical sites on this tour, it's about getting the full scope experience inside and all around with a thorough explanation on your terms of what is in front of you. What puts me off small group tours is the chance that your guide will be reading from a memorized script, even if it's his or her own. This tour, these tours, however, were as spontaneous as they were deeply enthralling. I advise you to book this day when in Rome.

Rome Tour

We just finished our tour with Luigi, and we couldn't even wait until we got home to write you and tell you how fantastic he was!!! What an incredible guide, genuine and so thorough in his knowledge of Rome and Italy's history. We couldn't have asked for anyone better. Thank you so much for the last minute change and of course for giving us one of your best. We will certainly recommend any and all of our friends coming to Rome to When In Rome for their tours! Sincerely, Will and Fiona

Great day in Rome with Chiara

It was very apparent that Kiara truly loves the history of Rome it showed through her enthusiasm and knowledge of the history and archeology of Roma. Chiara is entertaining and held our attention, which left us wanting to learn more. She was clearly the most enthusiastic guide among all the other guides that we were surrounded by. She was engaging with locals, other guides and most of all, our group. We spent the day with Chiara for our 7-hour tour of Rome and our group of 5 gives our Highest recommendation!

Rome tour 6th Sept

We've just got back to Australia after cruising around the Western and Eastern Mediterranean and doing tours in many cities. The tour in Rome was outstanding and was far and away the best tour we undertook on the trip. Chiara was sensational and we felt very lucky to have her guide us for our rushed visit to Rome. I cannot thank you guys enough for organising the day for us.
