2 IN 1: COLOSSEUM & ILLUMINATED ROME
Our newest 2-in-1 tour begins with the Colosseum inside and panoramic views therefrom, a comprehensive tour of the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill (self-guided), and a look down upon (NOT access to) the rarely-seen basement of the Colosseum (underground chambers, animal compounds, arms and weapons storage). See at first hand how and why the power and influence of blood-thirsty Roman Emperors meant death in the Colosseum for citizens from every last enclave of the Empire. After exploring the arena and a guided walk through the Roman Forum, you'll have time to tour the Palatine Hill alone before heading out at dusk across the historic heart of Rome, where you'll see beautiful churches, temples, squares and fountains!
Your expert When In Rome Tours guide will escort you past long waiting lines and into the famous amphitheatre with priority entrance tickets, where you'll hear why daily life was a dangerous life for many inhabitants of Rome in antiquity. Understand why the Colosseum was built, when, and by whom. Soon after, your tour will change direction as you walk across the arena floor where so many people died for public pleasure. You'll climb to the near top of the Colosseum from where you'll enjoy spectacular views of world-famous ruins, and then retrace your steps down to terra firma where you'll learn about the dark soul of the Colosseum and Porta Libitina. This is the dark realm of Libitina, Goddess of Corpses. You'll see the space which was last exit for thousands of gladiators and tens of thousands of wild animals brought to Rome from far and wide. Your Colosseum tour ends with new information about the history of the site. You'll enter the Roman Forum for a detailed look at the origins of Rome; the myths, the cults, the temples, Christianization and overbuilding, the Emperors, slaves, and how all of these have shaped the world we live in today.
The ancient Rome segment concludes at approximately 17:30 PM, at which time you can remain inside Roman Forum / Palatine Hill areas to further explore on your own for about an hour. Upon exiting the Roman Forum, you'll have time to refresh in a bar nearby before your Illuminated Rome Walk at 19:00 PM. We embark upon a splendid and fascinating stroll to and through all the most beautiful squares in Rome, where you'll see the magnificent fountains, temples, churches, monuments and ruins of real Rome, both on and off the beaten track.
For security reasons, backpacks, rucksacks, large handbags, luggage etc. are banned inside the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill.
